The Expert Panel

The Research Institute for Fragrance Materials (RIFM) is the global scientific resource on fragrance ingredients for consumers, official agencies and the industry. RIFM’s activities are reviewed by an independent Expert Panel, which provides strategic guidance, determines scientific study design and interprets test results for relevance to human health and environmental protection.

The Expert Panel selects its own members, who serve on a rotating basis. It is comprised of internationally known academic dermatologists, pathologists, toxicologists and environmental scientists. Additional expertise is provided by adjunct groups with knowledge in genetic toxicity, respiratory science, reproductive effects, environmental fate and epidemiology. The Panel determines safety of use for fragrance ingredients through consideration of available information and active generation of additional data. Its conclusions are presented to professional scientific and medical societies and are published in peer-reviewed scientific journals. When important for consumer and environmental protection, decisions of the Expert Panel regarding restrictions of use are published as IFRA Standards.

The Expert Panel is opening further dialogue with interested parties by calling for information on fragrance materials under review. Information may be submitted by e-mailing Dr. Ladd Smith, President of RIFM, at smith@rifm.org. You may also request to present your information in-person in your e-mail to Dr. Smith. For the Panel’s next meeting in September, information may be submitted by August 13, 2010 for the following materials:
• Macrocyclic lactones
• Macrocyclic lactides and ketones
• Aryl alkyl alcohols
• Alkyl alcohol simple acid ester derivatives

Information from interested parties received by RIFM, will be included as part of the background assembled for discussion of these Panel agenda items. Interested parties that request an opportunity to present to the Expert Panel during one of its meetings will undergo a formal review and must include a Q&A for the Panel.

Next Panel Meeting: September 13-14, 2010 - Strausburg, France

Expert Panel Ongoing Research

RIFM and the Expert Panel are exploring research on in vitro sensitization methods that are in line with those promoted by The Johns Hopkins Center for Alternatives to Animal Testing (CAAT) to replace existing techniques. The goal is to minimize the use of animals in testing, resulting in faster and more cost effective technology.

Plans are to support ongoing research on in vitro methodologies that are consistent with European regulations and conform to the 3Rs: Replacement, Reduction and Refinement, as noted by CAAT.
