What goes into a safety evaluation of natural complex substances (NCS)? NCS materials are extracted from plants like citruses and used in fragrance blends for various consumer products. They contain several (but not only) fragrance ingredients with different physical–chemical properties, making their testing process more complicated than those of individual (or “discrete”) ingredients.
Danielle Botelho, PhD, Safety Assessment Manager for the Research Institute for Fragrance Materials (RIFM), sat down recently with CosmeticsDesign’s Cassandra Stern to share some of the challenges and rewards she and her team experienced while pioneering the intricate and critical process of evaluating these essential fragrance ingredients—and of what the road ahead looks like for fragrance safety stakeholders as RIFM takes on the completion of hundreds of NCS Safety Assessments over the next few years.
