RIFM Scientist Dr. Isabelle Lee discusses advancements in skin sensitization testing

CosmeticsDesign USA recently published an interview with Isabelle Lee, PhD, Senior Scientist, Dermatotoxicology, at the Research Institute for Fragrance Materials (RIFM). As the lead for RIFM’s skin sensitization endpoint, Dr. Lee plays a key role in conducting safety assessments and research projects that advance the safe use of fragranced products.
In her conversation with CosmeticsDesign’s Cassandra Stern, Dr. Lee discussed the GARDskin Dose-Response (DR) assay, an innovative in vitro method that enhances skin sensitization assessments using human-derived cells. She highlighted how this approach offers greater relevance to human biology, providing more precise risk assessments. It is currently the only stand-alone animal alternative assay available for quantitative potency assessment. Additionally, she noted the assay’s efficiency in quickly screening multiple ingredients, making it a potentially valuable tool for researchers and regulatory bodies.
This interview follows the recent publication of this collaborative study on the GARDskin DR assay supporting its role in advancing non-animal testing methods for fragrance safety.
