Advancing RIFM’s Science at the Genetic Toxicology Association’s Annual Meeting
5.16.22

Senior Scientist Yax Thakkar, MS, who leads the Genotoxicity endpoint for the Research Institute for Fragrance Materials (RIFM), will participate in the Genetic Toxicology Association (GTA) 2022 Annual Meeting this Wednesday, May 18, at 11:25 AM EDT. The GTA will hold their meeting virtually.
Thakkar will present RIFM’s pioneering work on two animal-alternative micronucleus assays for genotoxicity. Micronucleus assays indicate when damage has been done to the genetic material—a potential precursor to more serious health risks.
The assays—a 3D skin model and a chicken egg test—have been shown to replicate the results of historical animal testing. RIFM dedicates its research efforts to identifying and refining New Approach Methodologies, or NAMs. These two assays may provide additional support for the science-based assessment of fragrance materials to help ensure that everyone can safely enjoy their favorite fragranced products without testing on animals.
The GTA 2022 Annual Meeting is free for GTA members; non-members may attend this virtual event for a nominal registration fee. Visit the GTA website for more information.
