Advancing RIFM’s science detailing consumers’ low exposure to fragrances for HCPA members

The Research Institute for Fragrance Materials’ Senior Scientist for Dermatotoxicology, Isabelle Lee, PhD, will participate at the Household & Commercial Products Association’s 2024 Mid-Year Meeting May 7-10th in Washington, DC. Dr. Lee leads the skin sensitization endpoint at RIFM in conducting safety assessments and research projects.
Dr. Lee will participate in the Joint Air Care & Cleaning Products Division Program to present the findings of RIFM’s recently peer-reviewed and published low-exposure paper. Dr. Lee served as lead author of the paper.
The program runs from 1:00-3:00 PM on Thursday, May 9, and will explore indoor air quality and its relationship to household and commercial products.
“From experience, we know that exposure to fragrance ingredients is extremely low, and our recently published scientific study confirms this,” Dr. Lee explained. ”It’s a privilege to share the details of this critical paper with industry stakeholders such as HCPA, who represent fragranced household and cleaning products.”
Dr. Lee and her colleagues’ paper shows that consumer exposure to 99% of all fragrance-producing ingredients via inhalation is below the most conservative internationally recognized safe-use thresholds, even for the highest-end users.
“One of the paper’s findings of specific interest to this audience is that household care products represent the lowest exposure to fragrance compared to all other product types,” Dr. Lee continued. “We hope by detailing the paper’s findings for HCPA Mid-Year Meeting attendees to bring a more focused understanding of the real-world exposure data on fragranced products in their sectors.”
