Dr. Yax Thakkar to Speak on Fragrance Genotoxicity at HESI Global’s GTA Annual Meeting
5.2.25
Principal Scientist Yax Thakkar, PhD, lead of RIFM’s Genotoxicity Safety Assessment and Research programs at the Research Institute for Fragrance Materials (RIFM), will present at the Health and Environmental Sciences Institute (HESI) Global’s 2025 Genetic Toxicology Association Annual Meeting, taking place May 7–9 in Newark, DE.

His talk, titled “The Role of Metabolism in Evaluating Fragrance Genotoxicity,” is scheduled for May 9, 8:30–9:00 am, as part of Symposium IV: Metabolism as a Potentiator of Genetox Risk Assessment.
Dr. Thakkar will discuss recent findings on the metabolic activity of 3D skin models and the Chicken Egg Genotoxicity Assay (CEGA)/Hen’s Egg Test for Micronucleus Induction (HET-MN), and how these models support the use of New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) in genotoxicity testing. He will also present case studies demonstrating how metabolism informs NAM selection for dermal and oral exposure routes.
“Understanding metabolism is essential when assessing genotoxic risk,” Dr. Thakkar noted. “NAMs like the RSMN (Reconstructed Skin Micronucleus) assay and HET-MN offer valuable tools for evaluating fragrance materials in a way that reflects real-world exposure while reducing reliance on animal testing.”
