WATCH: How chicken eggs can save animal lives

We’re excited to share our latest video from the Research Institute for Fragrance Materials (RIFM), highlighting an innovative, ethical approach to fragrance safety testing: the Chicken Egg Genotoxicity Assay (CEGA).
This short video explains how the CEGA helps us determine whether a substance could damage DNA, a process known as genotoxicity testing, without relying on traditional animal models. At RIFM, we haven’t used animal testing for any human health endpoints, including genotoxicity, in over 13 years. Our Research Program, which focuses on New approach methodologies (NAMs) like the CEGA, plays a key role in keeping our science both rigorous and humane.
The assay, which uses fertilized chicken eggs before the nervous system develops and before embryos can feel pain, is internationally recognized as non-animal testing. Even better, the embryo’s liver metabolizes chemicals in a way that closely mirrors the human liver, making the CEGA both ethical and effective.
The video also highlights a successful test using a known genotoxicant and non-fragrance ingredient, confirming the CEGA’s power and accuracy.
Watch the video now to see how RIFM is shaping the future of fragrance safety through innovation, compassion, and science.
