Advancing RIFM’s collaborative science at the year’s biggest toxicology conference

Scientists from the Research Institute for Fragrance Materials (RIFM) will participate at the Society of Toxicology’s 63rd Annual Meeting and ToxExpo in Salt Lake City, Utah, March 10–14, 2024. The annual conference draws over 5,000 attendees.

RIFM researchers will share their knowledge and experience and advance their science through continuing education courses, poster presentations, workshops, panels, and special ancillary sessions throughout the five-day conference.

Several RIFM scientists will attend this critical meeting, presenting recent research that RIFM has performed in collaboration with fragrance safety stakeholders. Additionally, RIFM scientists will join Creme Global’s data scientists at a special ancillary session highlighting RIFM and Creme’s work on the Creme-RIFM Aggregate Exposure Model.

We look forward to sharing some ongoing research detailed below with the larger toxicology community in March. (Unless otherwise indicated, all at Salt Palace Convention Center, ToxExpo Hall.)

Sunday, March 10

Senior Scientist Nikaeta Sadekar, PhD, DABT, will present Using Weight of Evidence for Inhalation Exposure Safety Evaluation of Fragrances as part of the continuing education course Weight of Evidence Analysis and Problem Formulation for Chemical Risk Assessment: Fundamental Principles and Application through Case Examples, 8:15 AM–12:00 PM MST.

Monday, March 11

RIFM President Anne Marie Api, PhD, will present Aggregate exposure analysis shows that exposure to fragrance ingredients in consumer products is Low: Many orders of magnitude below thresholds of concern (a collaboration with Creme Global). Session: Human Exposure Assessment/Biomonitoring, 9:15–11:15 AM MST, abstract/poster: 3328/P451.

Senior Scientist Kaushal Joshi, PhD, will present A Pilot Study to Evaluate the Kinetics, Metabolism, and Toxicity of a Fragrance Material (Cinnamaldehyde) in an In Vitro Three-Organ Integrated Microphysiological System (MPS) Model (a collaboration with LifeNet Health). Session: New Approach Methods: General, 9:15–11:15 AM MST, abstract/poster: 3496/P732.

Scientist Maura Lavelle, MS, will present Prediction of points of departure for fragrance ingredients by integrated OECD in vitro models and assessment of weight of evidence potency categories (a collaboration with Givaudan). Session: Skin Sensitization, 9:15–11:15 AM MST, abstract/poster: 3200/P313.

Senior Scientist Isabelle Lee, PhD, will present Determining a point of departure for skin sensitization potency and quantitative risk assessment of fragrance ingredients using the GARDskin dose-response assay (a collaboration with Senzagen and International Flavors & Fragrances). Senior Associate Scientist Jake Muldoon, PhD, will present Analyzing the role of vinyl- and vinylene-containing fragrance ingredients in skin sensitization using the SENS-IS assay. Session: Skin Sensitization, 9:15–11:15 AM MST, abstract/poster: 3201/P314.

Safety Assessment Team Researcher Isabella Schember, PhD, will present Assessing the skin sensitization potential of fragrance ingredients using the peroxidase peptide reactivity assay (a collaboration with Procter & Gamble). Session: Skin Sensitization, 9:15–11:15 AM MST, abstract/poster: 3203/P316.

Senior Scientist Nikaeta Sadekar, PhD, DABT, will present Enhancing the Science of Respiratory Sensitization: Starting with What Are Respiratory Sensitizers during the workshop “Allergies Are More Than Skin Deep: Establishing Regulatory Test Methods for Respiratory Sensitization,” 1:45–11:30 PM MST.

RIFM President Anne Marie Api, PhD, Principal Scientist Gretchen Ritacco, MS, and Senior Scientist Isabelle Lee, PhD, will join data scientists Brendan Ring and Cronan McNamara of Creme Global for the Research Institute for Fragrance Materials and Creme Global Collaborative Exposure Efforts Reception. Tuesday, March 12

Senior Scientist Isabelle Lee, PhD, will present as part of the panel Advancing NAMs for Skin Sensitization Testing: Medical Devices and Quantitative Potency Assessment (a collaboration with SenzaGen). Room 155F, Salt Palace Convention Center, 9:00–10:00 AM MST.

Senior Scientist Nikaeta Sadekar, PhD, DABT, will present Evaluating the deviation of the inhalTTC group’s assessment on NOAEC/LOAEC values from those of the study authors (a collaboration with Cosmetics Europe, Fraunhofer Institute, Procter and Gamble, and the United States Environmental Protection Agency). Wednesday, March 13
