RIFM brings global aquatic risk prioritization to SETAC Asia Pacific 2026
9.14.26
Aurelia Lapczynski will present a broader geographic approach to environmental risk assessment of fragrance materials in Tsukuba, Japan.

Environmental risk assessment must account for how fragrance materials may enter aquatic systems worldwide. At the SETAC Asia-Pacific 15th Biennial Meeting in Tsukuba, Japan, RIFM will share how it is advancing a more globally relevant approach to prioritizing fragrance materials for further environmental evaluation.
Aurelia Lapczynski, RIFM Manager, Environmental Science & Strategy, will deliver the platform presentation “Advancing Environmental Risk Assessment of Fragrance Materials: Global Prioritization in Aquatic Systems Beyond Europe and North America.” Her presentation will consider how expanding the geographic scope of prioritization can strengthen the scientific foundation for understanding potential risks in aquatic environments.
“Fragrance materials are used globally, and environmental risk assessment should reflect that global reality,” Ms. Lapczynski explained. “By expanding prioritization beyond Europe and North America, we can better identify where aquatic exposure warrants closer attention and direct scientific resources where they can have the greatest value.”
The work speaks to a central challenge for fragrance safety stakeholders: how to use available information efficiently while accounting for meaningful regional differences. Prioritization helps scientists identify the materials, uses, and environmental settings that merit closer evaluation. A broader geographic perspective can make those decisions more relevant to the many markets in which fragrance materials are used.
Lapczynski’s presentation is part of session 3.08.B.T, “Integrated Approaches in Ecological and Human Health Risk Assessment (APAC Focus).” The session brings the discussion into an Asia-Pacific context, where collaboration and regionally relevant information can help advance practical, science-based environmental risk assessment.
RIFM’s participation reflects its commitment to advancing environmental science through research, data, and engagement with the global scientific community. Sharing this work at SETAC creates an opportunity to exchange perspectives with environmental scientists and strengthen approaches that support informed decisions about fragrance materials worldwide.
