The Expert Panel for Fragrance Safety Turns 55

6.29.22

Fifty-five years ago, the Expert Panel for Fragrance Safety was founded as an independent panel of experts to oversee and review the science conducted by the Research Institute for Fragrance Materials (RIFM).

“The establishment of the independent Expert Panel for Fragrance Safety in 1967 was the first of several steps taken to ensure the scientific objectivity of our work,” explained RIFM’s Vice President Anne Marie Api, PhD. “Among many other things, the Panel provides us with strategic guidance and determines scientific study design interprets test results for relevance to human health and environmental protection. RIFM literally could not do our work without them.”

The Expert Panel comprises internationally recognized academic scientists with no ties to the fragrance industry, including dermatologists, pathologists, toxicologists, and environmental scientists. It selects its own members, who serve on a rotating basis. (Read more about the international academics who make up the Expert Panel on their website.)
